Karl Strauss Brewing Co.

There are many great breweries in the city of San Diego. They produce various types of beer, including dark ale, pale ale, red ale, wheat beer, and lager.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company is a local microbrewery with German roots. Karl Strauss was born in 1912 on the premises of his father´s brewery in Minden, Germany. In 1939, he set sail for America. At his retirement he was the vice president of production at Pabst Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1989, Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner, asked Karl Strauss, Cramer´s cousin, to help them develop a brewpub. Strauss helped create recipes for the first beers, and the next year the first brewpub in San Diego in over 50 years opened the doors, at Columbia Street. Today it is known for a selection of German-style beers, including the annual Oktoberfest release.
